![]() Anybody who's been to Vault 87 can tell you that this is an terrifying possibility that relies on more variants than I could possible name. Why have certain species, conversely, gone completely extinct when they might have actually stood a chance in real life? Because their bodies failed to accept the mutations that were given by the FEV. FEV exposure can drastically change how the body reacts to radiation, and the two working in tandem can create some truly monstrous (see Deathclaws) beasties in no time at all. Why have some animals undergone nightmarish mutations that make no logical sense and would never happen in the real world (Looking at you, Mirelurks) ? Because it's not just the radiation that's changing them. The difference between death from a bad mutation and a better life thanks to a good one could come down to as little as the placement of a single chromosome, or a single gene in their DNA. Why are some enemies in the games stronger and tougher than others, even though they're of the same species and have likely seen identical levels of radiation exposure? Because FEV affects everybody differently, we saw that with the super mutants and their "failures." Modern animals and humans are physically and genetically complex beings. I propose that, if true, this nation-wide blanket of a light FEV strain would explain so much in the franchise. I know this is just rambling about game mechanics, but god damn it if this sub wasn't founded on the principles of coming up with convoluted explanations of things that really shouldn't matter. This would explain why the Enclave in Fallout 2 are so virulently disgusted by everybody in the wasteland, even those who had never been exposed to radiation, as they couldn't help but be exposed to the FEV. The explosions and subsequent rad storms lifted the virus up and blanketed it across the entire wasteland in a matter of decades. As I recall, the bombs falling had cracked open a military compound somewhere in the country that had been filled with an experimental strain of FEV. ![]() I can't verify where I heard it from, but I recall reading something here (or perhaps in one of the games) about FEV becoming airborne.
